Description:
The first compilation of DG recordings by popular violinistsAll Deutsche Grammophon recordings by popular violinist Johanna Marzi and viola player Michael Mann from the original five albums are now available on this 2-CD set. Johanna Marzi (1924-1979) became one of the best violinists of her generation with her wonderful tone and outstanding recording sense. Already highly acclaimed for her EMI albums, Marzi began her career with the Dvorak and Mozart concertos for Deutsche Grammophon, where she was signed alongside two star conductors, Ferenc Fritschaj and Eugen Jochum. He recorded with pianist Jean Antonietti, his most frequent recital partner, beginning in 1951. Encore pieces by Ravel, Milhaud, Faria, and Szymanowski capture Marzi's Hungarian passion. When these encore pieces were released on LP, they were coupled with two viola sonatas by contemporary composers performed by Michael Mann (1919-1976). Mann is the son of novelist Thomas Mann.
