Originally known as the English Electric Type 3, the class was ordered as part of BR’s modernisation plan, with 225 examples built at its Vulcan Foundry Works and 84 at its subsidiary, Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns. Designed for freight work and also secondary passenger routes, all 309 were introduced between 1960 and 1965. No. 37086 entered service at Gateshead in December 1962 as green-liveried D6786. It was later painted blue with full yellow noses and given the number 37086 under TOPS in February 1974, the condition in which the model is presented. It would later receive modifications and be renumber 37516 in the sub-class 37/5 in 1985. It is still in operation with West Coast Railways.
